Test Routes and the Driving Instructor
Following another series of discussions with TMR and Service NSW the issue of Driving Instructors clogging test routes rears its head, yet again. You are reminded that it is a requirement of BOTH regulators that teaching on test routes is:
A) Creating massive congestion
B) Strongly opposed by the driver testers
C) Highly inconvenient and unsettling for local residents
But most importantly, is a very poor and very anti-holistic educational method. By teaching a student to “pass a test” you have simply done that. The practice of educating young drivers should involve a rounded and varied learning syllabus.
After delivering quality, balanced, education, you will find that your student will pass the test with flying colours. By simply running the test route, you have robbed your student of the educational outcome.
The ADTA backs the regulator 100% in this matter and also see’s advertising and web posts offering an “insider” track to the test routes as both wrong, and a
poor reflection on the instructor offering this so called “teaching method”.
QLD TMR Meeting
We were very pleased to meet with the team at TMR last week who gave us a sneak peak of the next stage of the PrepL Program, being the PrepL Supervisors course. This online learning tool is aimed at supervisors (and when released tentatively later in 2019) will be available for supervisors to access by way of an online subscription.
The content of this program has been well
developed and well presented in a format that follows the learning path of the student.
For the parents that choose to engage in the program, it will offer a refresher on road law and a greater understanding of the requirements that their child is working towards.
This resource will be a tremendous aid to instructors. It will be useful in car as a road side resource as well as an invaluable channel between instructors, students and supervisors. We will notify everyone once it gets closer to release and we will run workshops outlining its functionality for driving instructors to use.
NSW Centre for Road Safety
Mick Humphries along with director Peter Camilleri had the pleasure to meet with Bernard Carlon the CEO of Centre for Road Safety and his team last week. We presented our Master Driving Instructor Qualification as a Professional Development tool aimed at providing greater consistency to the driver training industry.
Bernard offered some fantastic suggestions on the day in addition to those that we already had on the table. The ADTA is very pleased that Centre for Road Safety will be active in supplying us further resources and networking
opportunities with other industry sectors as we roll out the program.
Filling up a busy few weeks of regulator meetings, Mick along with ADTA Vice President Julie Emerson and Director Peter Hales met with the management team and driver testing team for our regular discussions. On the table were items including a few targeted issues raised by members. Those members will be responded to individually. We also had discussions concerning the issue of test wait times.
The team at SNSW are proactively working to bring wait times back down to the historically low levels we were at by:
1. Currently recruiting and training a large number of new driver testers
2. Offering Saturday testing
3. Bringing in testing officers from regional centres for one week blocks to try and boost capacity in the Sydney basin.
Mick questioned whether bringing country assessors to Sydney was simply
moving the problem but was assured by SNSW Management that these are multi task staff and have been able to come and assist without any negative impact on service levels in their home region.
Regarding Saturday tests, the ADTA was notified of this extra capacity and the tests were taken up quite quickly.
Whilst there are still some centres where the test wait is still exceeding 10 days (some even a littler higher than that) the proactive move by SNSW is seeing a gradual reduction in these wait times and we hope that with the ongoing commitment will see these test wait times reduce to the same levels they were mid last year.
Keep your eyes open for a special ADTA / SNSW bulletin that will outline the future roll out of the digital drivers licence and SNSW mobile busses that are providing services in every area they visit.
Wollongong Driving School Health Check Seminar
A group of 14 instructors met overlooking the Boat Harbour in Wollongong this week attending our Driving School Health Check workshop. The topics on the day included; Business profitability, child protection legislation, vehicle running costs and much much
Everyone who attended was pleased with the overall content of the day and said they would strongly recommend the seminar to other instructors.
Master Driving Instructor Certification
The ADTA Admin Team has on-boarded a very small number of Master Driving Instructors in order to check and test our admin procedures. Over the next few weeks, you will see invitations which will allow all members to become part of the program should they choose.
Master Instructors will participate in an ongoing Professional Development Plan as well as external auditing of their business in relation to many criteria including; their car, to
their lesson plans. Please watch this space carefully as we will have a special addition newsletter launching the Master Instructor Program.

Driver Mentor Program
The ADTA actively supports the work of genuine driver mentoring programs that provide volunteer services to disadvantaged members of the community. Our friends at Carers NSW are looking for volunteer mentors to assist their
program in the Canterbury and Hurlston Park areas.
The people on this program are young carers, generally caring for a family member that has transport needs. For them, the prospect of achieving the required 120 hours is almost insurmountable.
We see this as an opportunity to promote the program and you may be able to offer support in the following ways:
Volunteer to conduct a few hours of driver mentoring yourself (using their vehicle)
You may know someone who would function well in this role
Thinking outside of the box – you might be undergoing driver instructor training and this could be a great way to get some experience on the road quite legally as no money changes hands.
If you are interested, the flyer can be accessed by clicking here
WA App Trial

The app is designed in such a way that is doesn’t require any interaction with the mobile phone whilst driving. Once released, you will be able to access the App at www.transport.wa.gov.au/learnlog
The ADTA is pleased to advise that our friend Beth Cheal is conducting another Rehab / Disability training workshop. If you are looking to work in this space Beth’s course is a valuable step in the right direction.
